In this series we pay tribute to three iconic drum breaks and the drummers who created them. These grooves have been sampled in thousands of songs and helped usher in a new era in popular music. Our posters are packed with information that accurately illustrates the significance of these drum breaks.

    The number of times these grooves have been sampled over the years is extraordinary. Using data from the incredible website WhoSampled, we transformed this history into a readable chart that looks like a waveform.

    The art of sampling started with hip-hop, but it was quickly adopted by artists across different genres. From Björk to the Poweruff Girls theme tune, these grooves have made the rounds. To capture this fascinating history, we added a chart that shows the sample use by genre.

    Just because we developed our own music notation doesn't mean we are strangers to standard music notation. To make sure that the story of these drum breaks is told from every possible angle, we also included the grooves in staff notation.
