The miracle website “WhoSampled”
Information about the artists, producers and engineers who made some of the world’s most popular samples is hard to come by. Take the “Amen, Break” for example. There is very little information on the internet about George Coleman, and he is the drummer who created the most sampled drum break ever; how is that possible? There is no denying that institutional racism and the systematic exploitation of black culture has part of the blame in this story. There is unfortunately a long and shameful history of artists profiting on the work of black artists, while the original creators are left penniless and forgotten.
One organisation which has done more than any other to improve this sad state of affairs is the website “WhoSampled”. Their premise is simple and genius: you search up a song and they will tell you which samples are used in it! WhoSampled contains the world's most comprehensive, detailed and accurate database of samples, cover songs and remixes, showing how the entire musical spectrum is interconnected in exciting and surprising ways.
Here at Postersounds we have spent many happy hours browsing their incredible database. If you are at all interested in sample-based music, we strongly encourage you to check them out!
